Historic French Church in Guadeloupe Hit by Repeated Break-Ins

The church Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, Caribbean, France, has suffered around 10 break-ins in four months, according to French public broadcaster Guadeloupe La 1ère.

Since late March, intruders have repeatedly entered the 17th-century church, leaving smashed stained-glass windows, broken donation boxes, damaged crosses, overturned furnishings, and other vandalism.

Rev. Jules Ahouandjinou called the attacks "a profanation that does not bear its name". Despite police complaints, surveillance cameras, and forensic evidence, the break-ins have continued.

Founded by the Jesuits in the 17th century, it is one of Guadeloupe's oldest Catholic churches, a protected French Historic Monument, and a major Marian pilgrimage site.
